Little Hiawatha has a canoe of his very own. It wa given to him by his father, the Indian chief and Little Hiawatha is very proud of it. As soon as he learned how to swim, his father allowed him to take his canoe on shallow lake, and paddle it about all by himself while his father watched from the shore. Little Hiawatha enjoyed this very much indeed, but sometimes he couldn’t help feeling rather lonely.
“I do wish that some of the young Indian braves had canoes too,”said Little Hiawatha to his father one day.”Then they could come canoeing with me.”
The Indaian chief thought for a while, and then he told Little Hiawatha that as it was tree-feeling time he would allow the young Indian braves to have a tree trunk each to use as a canoe.
“What a splendid idea,Father,” said Little Hiawatha.”We’ll ask the beavers to hallow out the tree trunks with their sharp teeth.”
The beavers were soon at work and the young braves were delighted with their tree-trunk canoes.
“Let’s all go canoeing now.” said Little Hiawatha when the new canoes were ready.
Little Hiawatha carried his canoe to the shallow lake and the young braves carried their tree-trunk canoes. Soon they were all having fun together on the water
The Indian chief watched them feeling very glad that his little son now had lots of friends to keep him compony..
