Madame Bonfamille lives in a very good grand house in Paris, and she has a lovely garden. In it is a beautiful summerhouse, where she sits on sunny afternoons. Her cat, Duchess, and Duchess’s three kittens, Marie , Berlioz, and Toulouse, all love the summerhouse! They like to lie on the warm, wooden floor and gaze out at the beautiful garden. The summerhouse is full of interesting things for the kittens to explore.
The kittens were sad, therefore, one autumn day, when Madam Bonfamille said :
“I think it’s time for us to close up the summerhouse. We’ll open it again next summer.”
Madame Bonfamille asked her butler, Edgar, to take everything out of the summerhouse, sweep it clean, and lock the doors.
“oh, I do feel unhappy now that summer has come to end ,’’sighed Marie.
Duchess, Berlioz and Toulouse felt sad, too. They followed Madame Bonfamille indoors, and she took them into he r grand living room. Madame Bonfamille had asked Edgar to light a warm log fire in there, and the room felt very cozy. She placed a silk cushion in front of the fire fr Duchess, and a soft rug were the kittens could sleep.
“Now,” said Madame Bonfamille, “this is the time of year for tea beside the fire.”
She asked Edgar to fetch tea.
“Ooh, there will be cheese for us, and cream, and perhaps even a ham sandwich each,” Duchess told her kittens. “Autumn afternoos can be very cozy indeed, you know.”
The kittens forgot about the summerhouse. They weren’t sad any more, because they were busy looking forward to all the cozy autumn afternoons that lay ahead.
